October 5, Fineko/abc.az. European nations are starting the upcoming heating season with historical lows in natural gas reserves, according to The Economist. Regional gas storage facilities are currently filled to just 72%, marking the lowest level recorded for this time of year. By comparison, average storage levels between 2021 and 2025 stood at around 88%.
Germany is facing the most significant shortfall, with its storage capacity hovering at approximately 57%. Analysts estimate that Europe can navigate the winter without major disruptions provided the weather remains mild and gas supplies from Qatar fully resume by December.
However, a harsh winter could trigger intense competition with Asian markets for liquefied natural gas (LNG), driving prices significantly higher. Additional vulnerabilities cited include potential disruptions to alternative energy sources, lower hydroelectric output, and unexpected nuclear power plant outages.
