September 3, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. foreign trade deficit widened sharply by 24.4% month-on-month in July to $88.6 billion, reaching its highest level since early 2025, according to data from the Commerce Department. During the period, total imports rose by 2.8%, while exports fell by 2.1%.
The main driver behind the widening gap was an 11.4% surge in capital goods imports—including computers, semiconductors, and telecommunication equipment—reflecting aggressive corporate investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. This marked the largest single-month jump in capital goods imports since 1993. Meanwhile, ongoing trade friction, including a 50% tariff imposed on Canadian imports, continues to create volatility in overall trade dynamics.
